Kandy Perahera

When: July to August

One of the biggest and sacred celebrations of the year, Esala Perahera (the festival of the tooth), held in July or August, during which devotees pray for good rains to cultivate the crops. One of Buddhism’s most sacred relics, the sacred casket of Tooth is taken from the Temple the Tooth and paraded through the streets. It has become a unique symbol of Sri Lanka and It consists of dances and nicely decorated elephants (hundreds of them). There are fire-dancers, whip-dancers, traditional Kandyn dancers and various other cultural dances.
